By Park Si-soo North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s son and heir apparent married last year and his wife is a student at an elite university in Pyongyang, a news report said, citing sources in the reclusive state. “There is a widespread tale among military officers and bureaucrats in the North that Kim Jong-un turned 30 this year and he was married in September last year to a woman in her 20s,” said Daily NK, a Seoul-based online news website focusing on issues related to the North. Citing sources in North Hamgyong Province, it said she is two years younger than Jong-un and studies at Kim Il-sung University, North Korea’s top school named after the nation’s founder and father of the current leader. It added the woman, whose father is a professor and mother is a medical doctor, is now studying to be a doctor at the university. “Since last year, several black Mercedes-Benz sedans have come to her parents’ home in Chongjin, North Hamgyong Province, every national holiday to deliver gifts from Jong-un,” it said. “There is a rumor that her mother wields stronger political influence than ranking officials at the Workers’ Party.” Seoul’s spy agency refused to confirm the story, citing a lack of hard evidence. Meanwhile, there is clear evidence that Jong-un is solidifying his position as successor to his ailing father. The North’s official Korea Central News Agency released a group photo last Tuesday, in which Jong-un was sitting on the front row with his father Kim Jong-il, with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang posing in between, a clear sign that he is the undisputed No. 2 in the North. The agency also reported the Chinese vice premier gave presents to both the North Korean leader and his son. Li is widely believed to be in line to take over as China’s premier from the incumbent Wen Jiabao next year. < 기사 해석 > |
