[영어 기사] High school student surprises Samsung, LG-엔토영어

An 18-year-old student was admitted to the Department of Software of Hanyang University in Seoul through the admission officer system for developing “Kyuhyeok Rom,” software that improves smartphones.

Second-grade scores are not sufficient for a student to be admitted to the department. The student, Lee Kyu-hyeok, earned six-grade scores at his school. But the university decided to admit the student for his potential, persistence and intimacy. “I don’t know about my potential. But I’m proud of my persistence as I worked day and night to make Kyuhyeok Rom,” Lee said.

Firmware, installed on the smartphone, activates the device. But the speed of its activation is very slow as the device has many applications with the focus on the stable operation of its system.

The student eliminated parts which, according to him, are not necessary. Kyuhyeok Rom enables the smartphone to start working speedily and the user to utilize the increased memory for other purposes.

“When I was a senior at middle school, I bought the Blackjack Samsung smartphone. But it was too slow and sometimes stopped operating. I began work to repair it and made Kyuhyeok Rom. I thought it would be useful for other people, I distributed the software via the Internet blog, http://kyuhyuk.kr,” Lee said.

스마트폰의 성능을 개선하는 소프트웨어에 자신의 이름을 붙인 규혁롬(Rom)을 개발한 덕분에 최근 한양대 수시모집에서 입학사정관제 전형을 통해 소프트웨어학과에 합격한 이규혁(18)군.

한양대 소프트웨어학과는 사실 내신성적 2등급도 합격 여부가 불안한 학과. 하지만 대학측은 내신 6등급인 이군을 "전문 분야에서 무한한 잠재력을 갖고 있고 은근과 끈기가 돋보인다"며 선발했다.

"잠재력은 잘 모르겠지만 규혁롬을 개발하면서 밤낮없이 매달렸던 끈기만큼은 자신합니다. 사실 저도 제 자신의 이런 집중력에 놀랐어요."

스마트폰에는 기기를 작동시키기 위한 소프트웨어인 펌웨어가 설치돼 있다. 그런데 기본적으로 들어가는 애플리케이션이 많고 안정적으로 시스템을 운용하는 데 주안점을 두기 때문에 시작 속도가 매우 느리다. 여기서 필요 없는 부분들을 극소화한 것이 바로 규혁롬이다.

규혁롬을 사용하면 스마트폰의 시작 속도가 빨라지고 늘어난 메모리를 다른 데 활용할 수도 있다.

"중3 때 삼성 스마트폰 블랙잭을 샀는데 너무 느렸어요. 쓰다가 꺼지기도 하고. 그래도 내가 한번 고쳐서 써 보자고 해서 시작해 만든 거예요. 그러다 다른 사람에게도 유용할 것 같아 지난해 인터넷 블로그(http://kyuhyuk.kr)를 통해 배포했죠."
