The 63 Building in Yeouido, Seoul, is to be renovated over the next five years as part of efforts to maintain its reputation as a landmark skyscraper in the face of up-to-date buildings in the capital area. According to Korea Life Insurance headquartered in the 246-meter-high building, also known as the 63 City, about 13,400 glass windows made from golden reflective materials will be replaced with new ones, and interior design, IT infrastructure and equipment to be modernized by 2016. “The gold-colored glass windows are referred to as the symbol of the 63 Building, but as time goes on, they have discolored, which disturbs the visibility inside the offices,” said an official at the insurance firm affiliated with Hanwha Group. “After renovation works, the building is likely to be the newest, high-tech building, reclaiming its reputation as a landmark building in Seoul.” The modernization also comes as high-tech skyscrapers have been built across Seoul, threatening the reputation of the 63 Building, which had been built in 1985 at the height of the Korean economic boom and by far the tallest building in the country and in the world, excluding North America, at the time. But it is the third tallest building in Korea and doesn’t even rank in the top 100 tallest buildings in 2010 in the world, with occupants in the building complaining of older building systems Furthermore, the up-to-date Seoul International Finance Center is set to be completed near the 63 City next year. The financial center, jointly funded by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and AIG Life Insurance, a rival of Korea Life Insurance, is a signature project of Seoul’s bid to develop the capital as a regional financial hub. The finance center is designed to be 284 meters long. 63 refers to the building’s 63 official stories, of which 60 are above ground level and 3 are basement floors. The building overlooking the Han River serves as a number of financial companies, including Industrial Bank of Korea Securities, and houses a variety of entertainment places. The 59th floor houses the world's tallest art gallery and an observation deck known as 63 Golden Tower, that allows visitors to see as far as Incheon on clear days. The 59th floor features international restaurants called Walking in the Cloud, while the 58th floor houses family restaurants called Touch the Sky. The lower floors house an indoor shopping mall with approximately 90 stores, an Imax Theater, and a large aquarium. A convention center and banquet hall are also housed within the building.
