■ LEVEL PROFICIENCY SCALE
LEVEL 1 – The student is not able to communicate well his/her thoughts and ideas. He/ She finds it difficult to put his thoughts into words which means, the student does not have enough vocabulary knowledge. The student tends to communicate at a very slow pace and can not understand very well if you speak fast to him/her even if you are only using very simple words. The student communicates in isolated phrases and broken sentences only. The student may repeatedly make pronunciation errors which may cause them to be misunderstood often.
LEVEL 2 - The student is capable of communicating his/ her thoughts and ideas in a minimum level using only very basic words and can fairly understand simple conversation as long as it is spoken slowly or the other person repeats or rephrases what he/she is saying. The student can only talk about familiar topics since his/ her vocabulary knowledge is inadequate or limited. The student has difficulty in pronouncing some words in English and often not understood because of this. The student’s grammar has some errors and they tend to be broken which makes it difficult to understand.
LEVEL 3 – The student has the ability to express his /her thoughts using the vocabulary knowledge and the fundamental grammar structure that he/she has learned but may still make some grammatical mistakes here and there. The student can fairly understand and respond to an ordinary conversation with medium speed. However he/ she may have some difficulty in understanding more complicated words in sentences and may need it to be rephrased or repeated many times in order to get the main idea or gist of the sentence. His /Her pronunciation is fairly well yet still need more practice.
LEVEL 4 – The student is able to communicate his/her thoughts more appropriately and has more vocabulary words in store he/she may very well make himself /herself understood when trying to share one’s ideas about a topic . The student understands more complicated situations and has acquired the fundamental knowledge on grammar structure although they may still make some mistakes in grammar they are better understood. They may or may not have difficulty in pronunciation but they still need to practice this skill more for them to be more fluent in speaking the language. The student may still lack in his/her expressive power.
LEVEL 5 – The student has a better grasp of the vocabulary words in English and may very well put them to use in expressing there ideas and thoughts. They have good listening ability so they have no trouble responding to ordinary conversation even if it is slightly fast paced and they have better comprehension ability even with more complicated situations. The student has a good sense of grammar structure although may still have grammar lapses at times but this does not hinder them from conveying their point. They may have improved more on their power of expression. The student’s pronunciation may have improved significantly that they are better understood by others.
LEVEL 6 – The student has a good amount of vocabulary stock knowledge that he tries to make use every chance he/she gets. He/ she can manage to converse rather smoothly with more appropriate expressions on the side which gives the student a sense of confidence there by promoting a more confident and expressive nature. In terms of grammar although they may sometimes commit errors they can manage to self correct every time they do. They can most likely communicate their thoughts and ideas in different topics. Their pronunciation has improved a lot and so they are most likely better understood when they are speaking.
LEVEL 7 – The student is capable of communicating appropriately in most situations they can respond to fast paced conversation pretty well and can most likely get the point of the discussion quickly. He/ She can manage to respond using the variety of vocabulary word that he/she knows and can use them in some fashion that fits the situation perfectly and they may even add some idiom expression that they understand which suits the occasion well. The student may exude confidence in speaking since they are certain about their ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas and also figure out the ideas of others even in a rather fast paced conversation their fluency to the English language has greatly improved and has made them well understood even to native speakers of the language.
LEVEL 8 – the student’s ability to communicate is very much adequate as a non-native speaker with his/her own realm of experience he/she is capable of sufficient understanding and can typically respond with appropriate expressions and use idiom expression very well suited to a certain situation. They can express their opinions to a variety of topics even outside his/her field of specialization. Although speech is not equivalent to a native speaker he/she has a very strong grasp of the vocabulary, grammar and structure and has the ability to use the English language relatively fluent making them well understood by native speakers of the language.
■ SKILLS RATINGS AND DESCRIPTIONS:
1level – His/her level is a little limited, but he can use some simple vocabulary.
2level – He/she can speak English with good sentences structure but appears to be memorizing it.
3level – He/she can speak using survival English vocabulary and can talk about familiar topics only.
4level – He/she can make sentences with good structure and he has confidence when he/she speaks.
5level - He/she has the ability to express his/her ideas more correctly and communicate effectively.
6level – He/she has good sense of vocabulary knowledge and is able to use them when expressing ideas.
7level –He/she can express his/her ideas more and make use of more difficulty vocabulary words.
8level – He/she can make use of idiom expressions and also express his/her ideas in some fashion.
1level – His/ her fluency to the language is rather limited.
2level - He/ she is a bit hesitant and tends to express less fluently.
3level - He/she manages to express a bit more fluently but still stutters a lot
4level - He/ she stutters a bit less but when he/she speaks.
5level - He/she does not stutter as much but lacks confidence.
6level -He/she is able to express ideas a bit fluently but still lacks confidence.
7level - He/she is capable of expressing with more confidence and less hesitation.
8level - He/ she is very fluent and has no hesitations and more confidence than ever.
1level - He/she has difficulty in listening and needs to have the sentence repeated a lot before hearing.
2level - He/she can only listen to very slow paced conversation.
3level - He/she has some difficulty in hearing some words even if the conversation is slow.
4level - He/she can listen to what is being said but cannot repeat the words.
5level - He/ she can listen to a all the words in the sentence as long as it is spoken slowly.
6level - He/ she can listen to medium speed conversation but cannot repeat the words.
7level - He/she has the ability to listen to a rather fast conversation and can repeat it well.
8level - He/she has no problem with listening and repeating the words correctly even in fast conversation.
1level - He/she can not express ideas /thoughts in sentence only words.
2level - He/she can make broken sentence with poor structure.
3level - He/she can make sentences but has a lot of grammar errors and lapses.
4level - He/she is able to express ideas in simple short sentences.
5level - He/she can make longer sentences but still has grammar lapses.
6level - He/she can make longer sentences with lesser grammar lapses.
7level - He/she is able to form good structured sentences and express longer sentences with less mistakes.
8level - He/she makes very good and long sentences with good grammar and structure and almost no mistakes.
1level - He/she cannot pronounce most words well.
2level - He/she has difficulty pronouncing some English terms.
3level - He/she has difficulty pronouncing and tends to make the same pronunciation mistakes.
4level - He/she has difficulty in correcting pronunciation and finds it difficult to follow what is taught.
5level - He /she can pronounce some words fairly well but still makes the same mistakes at times.
6level - He /she knows the difference between right and wrong pronunciation but still has a hard time.
7level - He/ she can manage to self correct wrong pronunciations and can pronounce fairly well.
8level - He/she has almost no difficulty in pronouncing the English words and can self correct if mistaken.
