Single men prefer teachers as spouses |
By Yoon Ja-young
If you think doctors and lawyers are the most sought-after jobs as future brides, you would be wrong. The correct answer is teachers, symbols of stable occupations subject to less stress than doctors and lawyers.
According to a survey of 617 salaried workers by Job Korea, a job market information provider, most single males preferred teachers as wives, with 26.3 percent of them picking the profession. Females, meanwhile, most liked their marriage partners to be a government official, picked by 22.3 percent.
Female teachers have been consistently chosen as an ideal spouse here. According to a 2002 survey, teachers were picked by 14.7 percent of single males. At that time, however, females chose software developers as the best potential husband, reflecting the then IT boom. Government officials ranked third at that time.
“Government officials and teachers seem to be popular as people look for economically stable partners amid the economic downturn,” said Kim Hwa-soo, CEO of Job Korea.
“We get the same results when we survey singles,” said a representative for Duo, the country’s leading matchmaking company. He said that males, who mostly considered females’ physical attractiveness and cared little about profession, are also starting to put much emphasis on a stable job these days.
“On top of a stable job, teachers have a stereotypical image, neat and gentle.” Males also like teachers as they come home early and they have long vacations. They think teachers can better take care of the family than those working in other jobs. “Plus, they have a good pension,” the Duo representative said.
This isn’t really the deciding factor. He, however, said that they don’t necessarily choose based on profession at the time when selecting a spouse. “If you are to narrow down from many candidates, there are so many variables to consider. Your job doesn’t mean everything.”
Also popular as occupations of a future wife were government officials, picked by 21.5 percent males, followed by nurse, financial asset manager, and pharmacist. Meanwhile 10.6 percent of females liked financial asset managers, followed by doctors at 8 percent, then teachers and architects.
When asked what kind of company they would want their spouse to work for, 41.8 percent of the males and females both choose state-run enterprises, followed by conglomerates at 34.7 percent, and foreign companies and mid-tier companies taking less than 10 percent, each. Only 1.3 percent answered venture firms. Among those who chose conglomerates, one third picked Samsung, followed by Kumho Asiana and POSCO.
