By Yoon Ja-young Apple will change its after-sales service policy here in a way more favorable to consumers. It is complying with calls by the Fair Trade Commission to have defective iPhones replaced with new handsets instead of refurbished ones. The commission announced Wednesday that if consumers find a problem after buying an iPhone, Apple will exchange it with a new phone within one month from the purchase date. Currently, Apple’s after-sales service policy suggests a refund, exchange for a new or refurbished phone or free repair, but Apple has the right to choose how they will respond to each case. It has provided refurbished phones, made of components from returned handsets. The policy helps to protect the environment by recycling. Local consumers who are not accustomed to the recycling of components did not welcome the method while suspecting lower quality. The commission said that Apple agreed to change the policy. Not Apple but consumers will choose what will be done in the case their phones are broken. The options are a refund, exchange for a new phone, a refurbished handset or free repairs. Even after the one month period, if the problem continues, the broken phone will be replaced with a new one. “Among fair trade commissions around the world, Korea’s was the first to officially take issue with Apple’s policy and induce a change,” a representative for the commission said. The commission said that local consumers will be getting the most favorable iPhone warranty service in the world as Apple has changed the policy to meet the consumer conflict resolution standard here. In China, Apple has provided exchanges for new phones within 15 days since purchase, in accordance with the Chinese law. A spokesman for Apple Korea said he had no comment on the issue. Consumer complaints over the globally popular iPhone were mostly about its after-sales service policy here, but Apple has been gradually improving these. When it released the iPhone 4, it started providing a partial repair service, and increased the number of service centers. The competition between SK Telecom, the largest mobile carrier here, and KT, which had been the sole local supplier of the iPhone until early this year, also resulted in improved services for iPhone users as the two carriers competed to offer better options.
